THE STORY OF HUMMINGBIRD4
HOW IT CAME ABOUT
My poem documents had always been a mess. I used a heap filing system. My organised poems were stuffed into bulging files. I knew I'd written a poem about a particular subject but what or where it is was, was always a problem. I think I used these poems for that last workshop but where were they? And I'm almost certain, but not quite sure if I'd read this poem, or was it that one, at the open mic event last week.

Things had to change. I had over 50 years worth poems that badly needed sorting and organising.
THE VISION
What was needed was something that was readily accessible, easy to use, helpful and free.

That something turned out to be a purpose built, document management software application.
​
There have been two prototypes (versions 1 & 2) with the working title, SecretaryBird. The first was built around LibreOffice and the second used MS-Excel. They both were abandoned because of various unmet requirements, technical and design limitations.

THE TECHNOLOGY
To meet the operational requirements it was decided to build version3, a browser independent web application using a powerful combination of Python, Django-Baton and Postgresql.
​
Humminbird4 is a radical re-engineering. & restructure of the database model and an upgrade of the application's supporting software. This version includes +5,000 lines of bespoke code, +50 pages of help, a demo facility, PDF reports, GDPR & ePR compliance, activity tracking, enhanced filtering & much more.
